She's Alabama country, He's New York City, thrown together by an inheritance they both desperately need. *** In Martin Chapman’s will, his final request is a peculiar one. Upon the day of their marriage, his caregiver Lily Meyers and his grandson Bryce Fowler will become joint beneficiaries of his entire estate, which includes the Chapman Quarter Horse Ranch.

There’s only one problem, Lily and Bryce have never met. For the past three years, Lily and her five-year-old son Joey have lived on the ranch with Martin, never knowing they might inherit anything. Will Lily uproot her son from the only stable home he’s ever known, or will she marry a man she doesn’t know to secure her son’s future?

Bryce’s decision isn’t an easy one either. Will he leave the fast pace and bright city lights of New York City to move to the sleepy little town in Trinity, Alabama, or will the cowboy life and Lily prove challenging enough to chase him back to his comfort zone?

There’s something about the marriage of convenience plot that piques my interest. Perhaps it’s because we live in a society where arranged marriages aren’t the norm, and it’s interesting to see how a couple with seemingly nothing in common are thrown together by circumstance (aka the plot machinations of the author), and discover there is some commonality between them after all.

A Marriage of Convenience, debut novel from Debra Lynn Collins, has a lot going for it. A beautiful cover. Cowboys and horses. Good writing. Likeable characters, and a solid plot that manages to make what could be a contrived arrangement somehow work.

Lily Meyers is the widowed mother of five-year-old Joey, and the man she’s been employed by for the last three years has just died. She never expected to feature in Martin Chapman’s will, much less to inherit half of the Chapman Quarter Horse Ranch. But there’s a condition: she has to marry Martin’s grandson, Bryce Fowler.

For his part, Bryce has resented his grandfather for years, ever since the old man threw in his New York job, moved to Alabama to breed and train horses, and never wrote or called despite the fact Bryce was his only grandchild. But he wants his inheritance, so decides he’s prepared to go through with a platonic marriage of convenience. At least, that’s the plan …

Look away now if you don’t want to read the spoiler.

Everything was going well for the first 92% of the book. Well, if not exactly “well”, the plot was moving along with a good balance of conflict and resolution, and two characters who were gradually finding their way towards each other. Bryce has also discovered what a lying and deceitful piece of work his mother is, and has shared that information with Lily.

So when dear Sherry Ann calls Lily to tell her Bryce is in love with another woman, what does Lily do? Knowing Sherry Ann is a deceitful liar? That’s right. She believes Sherry Ann, and decides to break it off with Bryce. Really? Yes, this problem was resolved quickly, but it never should have happened at all only a few pages after Bryce told Lily how Sherry Ann kept his grandfather’s letters from him. It soured what, up until this point, had been an excellent story.

I had one other grouch. A Marriage of Convenience is marketed as Christian romance, but there's more to a Christian romance than a woman who goes to church. Specifically, there's that whole pesky bit about "unequally yoked", meaning both partners are Christians. I didn't see anything in A Marriage of Convenience that suggested Bryce had any personal faith, or was seeking faith, and I see this as a weakness.

I did enjoy A Marriage of Convenience, but recommend you stop reading at the end of Chapter Twenty Four.

But the author description of one of the characters I didn't like always saying she swaddled and her plump arms, each time she mentioned this character she used these words, it was very irritating to read, it was unnecessary to indicate that the character was fat. Shameful!
This is the first book I have read by this author. I must say it won't be the last story from Debra Lynn Collins I will read. I enjoyed this story
very much. It kept me up until 650 A M . I could not get to sleep, so I started reading around, 135 AM. My son bought me a kindle fire for
Christmas and I have really enjoyed it. I like to hold a book in my hand so I do both. I always have a book in my purse. I read 14 paper back
Books every month and have added 6 more for the past 8 months. I have read 7 on my kindle the past two weeks. I am 77 years old so I
have,a,lot of time on my hands and I enjoy reading. I am looking forward to reading many more of M's Collins books.
I love to read books where marriages set up for convenience turns into the fairy tale ending. And this book did just that. It is a wonderful relaxing read....I hated to put it down. You will definitely enjoy.
I love this book!!!! After I started it I could NOT put it down. I would find myself laughing out loud one minute and tears in my eyes the next. It was such wonderful writing I felt like I was there in Trinity. I was sad when the book was over but anxiously waiting for the next in the series.
I loved Lily, she is a true southern woman. She is strong, independent, and very spirited. She has been through so much but her heart is still open to love. Bryce is handsome and sweet. Even though he came from such a terrible family. And I even loved Wade he starts out harsh, but when I seen how much he cares for Lily and Joey. I knew he was a good man.
I look forward to Debra's next book. She is a breath of fresh air.
This was a beautifully written story filled with misunderstandings, conflicts and even a deal of violence, but these served to enhance the love story. The hero learns the difference between casual passion and real, selfless love. The heroine learns to trust again in spite of the fact that her life has been filled with people who should have loved her, but left her. Her son finds a father, even as the man discovers the joy of loving a child and begins to long for family. Even the romantic rival, who stoops to violence and deception, has an opportunity to experience forgiveness and redemption. This book was gentle on the Christian theme, but it was evident in the character of those seeking a relationship with God. This was everything I enjoy in a romantic tale.
Sweet story, great complication set up at the beginning that you want to see how it turns out. I really got into the dilemma of the lead characters. The girl, especially, was put into a difficult situation that any of us would struggle to face and I admired her devotion to her young son. (I enjoyed when the boy, Joey, was in any scenes too.) This is a good, clean romance, too by the way. I'm baffled by some who say it's not Christian or has bad words it in. It does not. And given the plethora of smutty romance books out there, seeing more like this is a breath of fresh air yet still highlighting the realism that yes, men and women can be attracted to each other. It was also neat to see various characters have to decide between doing the right thing or not. Great novel, and I can't wait to read more from this author.
I truly enjoyed reading this delightful modern day 'arranged marriage' story about single mother Lily from Alabama and Bryce, the Manhattan-based playboy grandson of Lily's late boss/friend, Martin Chapman. Martin left his ranch to both Lily and Bryce with certain strings attached. Watching them work toward a HEA ending was fun. There is brief mild violence and a few emphatic kisses but this is a clean plot and I'd recommend it for all but the youngest romance readers. I will look for other books by Debra Lynn Collins.
