The Blue Stephanie Void 9781480137950 Books Reviews
The writing and pacing of the story reminds me a lot of Edgar Rice Burrough's writing. As he's one of my favorite authors, that is a huge compliment. Highly recommend this book.
The Blue is awesome!! I loved that Alan was not perfect, that he was broken and feeling that adventure was beyond his reach, when in fact it was right in front of him. I will also say that because of this book I want my very own Leo!! As to not create a spoiler, I will not tell you who or what Leo is, to find out, you must read. I promise you will not be disappointed!
This is a must read! OK, it's a cliche. I rarely use it, but it is fitting in this case. The Blue has fast-paced action, adventure, mystery, a love story, humor, and a Leo all within its covers. The action moved quickly without any slow, tedious passages. The human emotions proceeded organically from the story line, yet it wasn't mushy. The characters were well developed and believable. I literally didn't want to put it down. When will the movie be released?
It's always a sign of a good, talented writer when she can make me care about a main character, even if the genre is beyond my usual comfort zone. Suspenseful and engaging, the writing pulls you in from the get-go, as Alan Michael Wolf is portrayed as an ordinary guy even with unusual circumstances. Flawed but otherwise good-hearted characters always make for good reading, even if fantasy isn't your thing. Plus the giant housecat is pretty cool.
My daughter gave me a copy of Stephanie's book for Christmas. I took it to the car dealership today and I must say, when they called my name to tell me my car was done, I actually grimaced! I was surprised to find that I was halfway finished with the book and didn't want to put it down. The Blue is very well written...love the characters, love the dialog, love the story with its twists and turns. Keep it up Stephanie! Can't wait to get my hands on more of your books!!
Disclaimer I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
WARNING SPOILERS!!! (Only little ones though ) )
There was a lot to love about 'The Blue'. It was fast paced, exciting and the futuristic universe was - mostly - believable and intriguing. The characters were engaging as was the plot.
I liked the concept of the Y'hilli, a guild of powerful assassins who are the main antagonists in this story. They were fearsome and certainly made for exciting reading. There is one scene in particular where they use Alan for target practice and... it was terrifying, I'll stop myself there.
As a protagonist, Alan was solid and developed over the course of the story. He didn't, however, stand out in any particular way from the hundreds of other heroes of his ilk and in this regard was a little flat as a character. Still, due to the exciting and fast-paced plot, this wasn't an issue.
And it is the plot which is the strong point of this story. Things were happening on every single page. Alan was blazing across the galaxy in a smugglers spaceship with a giant cat (you've got to love a book with giant cats!), desperate to find his sister who was in the clutches of persons unknown... And so it went, from one exciting, action packed scene to another. The plot - as a whole - worked well and I read the entire book with baited breath and a trembling heart.
However.
Yes, there is a however. And it isn't a big however. More of a pedantic however. In terms of the sci-fi elements of this book, I often felt as if technology was used to give Alan exactly what he needed. He needs to be a space reader? Ok, here's some Blue powder that makes him one! He needs to heal super quick? Ok, here's a vest that somehow can pump him full of healing chemicals! What, the vest broke? No problem, it can fix itself too! That's one of the dangers in sci-fi - and fantasy - that the technology or magic is so amazing and powerful it is tuned to a characters specific problem and can make it go away in a matter of paragraphs. All this could make the story seem a little contrived.
It was a little coincidental too in that events would align themselves to give Alan exactly what he needed. It was fine to begin with, but when he found his sister's necklace - that she'd lost years ago I might add - in a world wrecked by an enviro-storm in which everything else was destroyed... I started to think this was one coincidence too many.
But I didn't find the occasionally unbelievable technology and the various coincidences too prevalent and they didn't stop me from enjoying the book over all. In fact, I kind of loved it and look forward to more in this series.
I loved this book. It was absolutely fabulous. I cannot wait to see what else she comes out with next!
